The action is ongoing, fully detailed and riveting, and the military and equipment details are believable. The maudlin and romantic BS that I guess has to be in there somewhere to establish that these are human characters is kept to the right balance and does not distract more than a bit. I enjoyed reading it and finished it in two days, so obviously I was captivated enough to keep at it. My only complaint is that the Kindle edition (which is what I bought) has a number of typos in it that seem to come from electronic transcription. Words that have the characters r + n in sequence "rn" are misprinted to make an "m". So the word "born" becomes "bom" (b-o-m), and "discern" becomes "discem". There a bunch of these mistakes throughout the book. Also there are periods where there should be commas, typically where the next word after the comma is a capitalized name, initial or title where possibly an OCR (Optical Character Reader) saw the capital letter and assumed the previous sentence had ended, thereby enforcing a period. Lastly, there a words that are hyphenated in the wrong way/places. Since other readers are comparing Cobb to author Clancy, I have to say I don't find these kind of simple editing errors throughout Clancy's books. Fast-moving and highly technical naval action, with some caveats. I did not realize until I got into the book that it was written in 1996 and re-released in 2021. The action takes place in 2007, and some of the author’s predictions for that era are overly optimistic. There is no fleet of supersonic jet transports, and the Comanche helicopter was never approved for production. Hindsight, admittedly, but a notice of the original publication date would have been useful. The prospective romance between the captain and helo pilot was not very believable, but not as bad as the submarine series that had the captain sleeping with a subordinate officer. Finally, the naming of the destroyer class for “Duke” Cunningham was unfortunate, in that Cunningham, who started out as a genuine American hero, turned out to be a corrupt politician and convicted felon who, despite a Presidential pardon, is still responsible for restitution of over 3 million dollars of bribes he received while in office. All that being said, I will continue reading the series as it is well written and interesting, despite its flaws.
